Periodontal Care

Periodontal disease is a chronic bacterial infection that affects the gums and the bone that supports the teeth. Periodontal disease, "gum disease," includes gingivitis and periodontitis. There are varying degrees of both from slight to moderate to severe.

Plaque is a film of bacteria that coats the teeth causing the gums to become inflamed, red and bleed (gingivitis). If plaque is not removed it will calcify/harden and form calculus/tartar. Calculus is very difficult to remove and must be done by a dentist, hygienist or periodontist (gum specialist).

Treatment

Gingivitis - regular dental cleanings plus good oral home care will help reverse the symptoms of gingivitis.

Periodontitis - if your periodontitis is mild, your dentist will be able to care for your gums with treatment similar to that of gingivitis. If your periodontitis is more severe your dentist will refer you to a Periodontist (gum specialist) where periodontal surgery may be necessary.
